Problems with ailing 1938 tube stock on the Northern Line in the early 1970s led to its being dubbed ‘The Misery Line’. In an attempt to remedy the situation, two batches of new tube cars were ordered from Metro-Cammell to augment services. Built to the same general design as the 1967 tube stock on the Victoria Line, but adapted for crew operation, these became known as 1972 Mk 1 and Mk 2 tube stock. Here on 4 January 1975, 1972 Mk 2 driving motor car 3561 heads a train that has just turned short at East Finchley station, on one of the centre platforms that should have accommodated trains from Moorgate and the Northern City Line via Finsbury Park and Highgate. This station was completely rebuilt in 1939/40 as part of the 1935-1940 New Works Programme and should have afforded interchange between this line and ‘main’ Northern Line.
